We speak to Haida, who started Vanquish Fitness in Bandar Sri Damansara with her family. She is passionate about building a local neighbourhood community of people from all walks of life navigating busy lives and a fitness routine! Her favourite quote is: Take care of youth before old age, health before sickness, wealth before poverty, free time before preoccupation and life before death.

Tell us about your personal background – what do you do as your day job
My day job is a contradiction to my passion. I have worked in the oil and gas industry for about 16 years now. I started as a Project Engineer in Shell and now I am managing contracts for PETRONAS Pengerang project. I like my job, crunching number, analysis data and writing reports, but being in a corporate world was never my ideal work situation. I despised the stress, office politics, and favoritism at the work place. Even though the gym was my refuge from all the stress, going to the gym was not always easy for me due to the long working hours and the traffic that I had to endure daily commuting to work.
Tell us your fitness journey /background & your fitness goals
I started at a very young age. I was always an active kid. I represented the school in swimming competition, and I join the volley ball team. I've always liked sports. As I grew older, I was introduce to a fitness centre while I was still in college, which was about 20 years ago. At that time there were only few gyms around, the fitness industry in KL was still at its infancy. I started doing cardio and weight training to lose weight. I was slightly chubby than. I did not know much about exercise techniques, or proper workout plan. Smartphone and youtube were nonexistent at that time. I just did what I thought was right, through trial and error. After few months I realized that I was losing weight, my body was changing. I felt good and I was happy with my body shape, and the love affair with fitness began.
My fitness passion grew, as the industry grew. I started to gain more knowledge about different types of exercises, I joined classes and included free weight training in my routine. I became stronger, and I was not afraid to carry heavy weights. I never worried about looking like a dude. At my peak I could do an 80kg full squat.
I really believe that a woman can be strong; strong but gentle at the same time.
Yoga gives me the gentleness that compliments strength training. It assists with muscle recovery and prevents injury during workouts. My yoga isn’t perfect, back then I couldn’t do a 180 degree split or head stand without a wall, however I had strength in my arms, legs and core to do warrior poses, plank, chaturanga. This led me to apply for body balance instructor training by les mills. I found that I could present a class well, I was able to give good instruction to students, motivate them and at the same time keep the class fun and exciting. People were coming to my class and I became more confident presenting myself.
My fitness journey has never been easy, balancing work and life is a challenge that everybody faces and I am no different. There are times when my work overwhelms me, I can’t even make time to go to the gym. My weight fluctuates every time I am too busy. But I do know that my work cycle will constantly change. I may be busy today, but once my workload starts to reduce, I will go back to do what I always love doing. I realize that I don’t need to look like a fitness model, as long as I am happy and healthy.
What inspired you to start the studio/space?
Family! I married into a family full of fitness enthusiasts. My husband is a personal trainer and a body builder. My brother in law is also a personal trainer and so is his girlfriend. We all share the same passion and ideas. It began with the gym, vanquish fitness: we wanted a place that could reach out to the community to promote and educate people about fitness and health. We had the talent to conduct personal training but we realized that it was not enough to attract people. After few months of operations, we recognized the need to make the business more fun and happening. It was during Ramadhan last year (2016) that we went back to the drawing board, sketched out few ideas and started working on the studio. We designed the classes, we contacted various instructors, we renovated the space to include a wide fitness and dance area. We even included a play room as we wanted the studio to be child-friendly. Most importantly we do it as a team. It has even drawn us closer as a family.
Who is your target crowd?
Since family is our inspiration, the community around Bandar Sri Damansara including other nearby communities are our target crowd. We want to avoid being branded as a body builder’s gym. Its a gym and studio for all levels of fitness. As much as we want the gym junkie to consistently come to our gym or studio, we do want moms, housewives, young and old working adults to come. As working adults with family, we understanding the challenges that people face to keep a healthy lifestyle. That’s why both our gym and studio is located in a housing area. That’s why our studio is open to their children and that’s why we always have programs, events and some outdoor activities to give variety to our members. We may be small in terms of size but the quality of our classes, our trainers, instructors, tools and equipment are of high standard.
What is the one thing you love about owning /running your studio
I love to see our members achieve their goals. Whether it is achieving their target weight or become fitter and stronger. I love seeing their happy faces after a class or a workout. I love the crowd in the studio when the classes are full. People are happy and motivated, they make friends with each other.
Who is your inspiration?
My parents are one of them, they inspire me to work hard, have good work ethic, be kind and considerate to others and always be humble. My husband, despite whatever challenges that we might face, he inspires me to never give up. There is always light at the end of every tunnel. As a child, I was inspired by Nurul Huda Abdullah the Queen of South East Asia swimming in the 80’s. She inspired me to swim, and because of that I became the active person that I am now. Nana Al Haleq for her strength and her awesome workout tips. I sometime copy her quite a lot in my workouts. Nurul Izzah Anwar for her courage in fighting for what is right. I wish I could be more like her when facing office politics. Well the list just goes on and on. I like to end this with my favorite quote. Types of classes & difficulty level (beginner / intermediate / advanced)
Tabata : It is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) in specific of 20seconds-on, 10seconds-off interval and consist of 8 rounds of workout. It helps on fat burning and toning at the same time (All levels)
Fusion : A full body workout combine of functional training, mobility, agility and strength training. Consist of tools like kettle bell, ViPR , agility ladder, Battling Rope and many more. (All levels)
TRX : The TRX Suspension Trainer is the original, best-in-class workout system that leverages gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. You're in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise - because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance. (All levels)
Muscle pump : The total body workout using barbell of light to moderate weights and will help on burn calories and looking great to get fit, toned and lean. (All levels)
Yoga :Yoga does more than burn calories and tone muscles. It's a total mind-body workout that combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and meditation or relaxation. (All levels)
Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired cardio-dance workout that uses music and choreographed steps to form a fitness party atmosphere. While many of the types of dance and music featured in the program are Latin American inspired, classes can also contain everything from jazz to African beats to country to hip-hop and pop. Piloxing : A non-stop cardio workout that combine standing Pilates, boxing and dance. ABT: Abs, butts and thigh class, focus on your lower body muscles which helps you to burn more fat, increases bone strength, decrease injuries to your lower body especially knees and hips. (All levels)

Describe the design of your studio
The studio floor area is 2000sqfeet, which includes a wide space for dance and fitness workout. It also has functional area for group training. It is equipped with functional tools like kettlebell, vipr, trx etc.
Membership includes unlimited access to both gym and studio value at RM140 a month. No registration fee.
Membership for gym only is RM60 a month. No registration fee.
