team ash be nimble finished 2nd at asics relay kuala lumpur 2017 half marathon
Posted on October 14 2017
We sent a super girly & sporty team for the ASICS Relay Kuala Lumpur 2017 on Saturday night, 7 October 2017! Barely getting our act together to get our registration sorted out, we had a busy few weeks leading up to the Relay. Tana had her Malaysian University Games, Sue Kay was racing a half ironman somewhere, Sammy busy prepping for Miss Universe 2017 in Vegas in November, and well I was just trying to keep my head above the water with managing ash be nimble and asha! :)
With the race flag off starting at 8pm, we met at about 6.30pm, and managed to snap some photos with the Ananthan sisters, their brother and sister in law! Thought it was really quality family time to decide to do a race together. There was a bit of confusion as to where the runners started, what we supposed to pass on to each other (baton or sash?) and how we were supposed to know when our runners were coming in, but we decided to have a tonne of fun and not let anything faze us!
Hui, CEO & Founder of ash be nimble, running her fastest 4.95km in 20 minutes & 11 seconds
I started out as the first runner - and was hoping that I could hit my target sub-5 minute pace per kilometer. I really struggled with the humidity and heat, sweat pouring down my face, arms and legs, even well after I stopped running. We each had to run 5.4km to make up a total of a half marathon distance of 21km. I managed to get caught up by my good running buddy Hiap Wei who helped me speed up my second half of the run, as I was fading fast and really not motivated to drive a faster pace!
For training I had tried to do about 6-8km road or trail every week, at least once, and if possible twice. I even did some speed drills, trying to run 1km x 4 times as fast as I could, to hit about a 4:30-4:40 pace. I think it paid off! :)
Tana, Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 Top 10 finalist and our national 4x400m SEA Games Bronze Medalist
I found a second wind for the last 400m and just went for it, and passed over the sash to Tana. It took us a good 10 seconds to locate each other as the runners were not staying in the transition area behind the barricade. Our team name and numbers did not flash up on the screen either.
I got the emcee to announce Tana's name, twice, and then asked them to say 'Tanalaksiumy' instead haha! Tana found me and took off with lightning speed! Tana is amazing, she had just come back a day earlier from competing in 400m and 200m and relay events for the Malaysian University games.
Sammy was up next, our Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 and also one of ash be nimble's key ambassadors! She has been doing a few local road and trail races and is an avid and fast runner herself! Despite some allergies and a queasy stomach, Sammy completed her leg in less than 27 minutes!
Sue Kay, our ironwoman, breezed through the entire leg, clocking 21 minutes+ and finishing strong, with a huge smile, and looking AMAZING, like she had just done a quick warm up. Sue also runs her own branding and PR agency, a very talented woman and a heap of fun to run with!
We were so happy to get our medals and soak up the atmosphere around the finishing line. Despite the chaos and not being able to do our transitions easily between runners, we were happy because we finished strong.
We had so much fun dancing beside the live music stage, we didn't even bother checking our timing, assuming the leaderboard was correct and we weren't fast enough compared the seasoned road runners out there!
It wasn't till when we saw the results being shared on Sunday that we thought, hang on, if we started at 8pm and finished around 9:45 - 9:50pm, we could very well have a placing. When we couldn't find our results in the site we then contacted the organisers. They took a while and on Tuesday afternoon rectified the timing, somehow managed to find our timing and we were updated to be in 2nd place overall! We were so happy to learn our timing was 1 hour 49 minutes and that we each clocked a personal best for 5km! We only regretted not taking a photo on the number 2 podium spot!
What was more important was that we had A LOT OF FUN doing our first relay, we all hit our personal bests, and we got to take some fun photos on the day. We also got to get the Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 girls out and showing more Malaysia girls that fit is the new sexy! :)
Till the next Team ash be nimble race!
